What is ID.me, and how do you verify from Türkiye?
ID.me is a private identity verification service that many US government agencies use to let people sign in to their online services. Amazon sellers often misunderstand one point: you need ID.me to sign in to the IRS's online accounts, not to open an Amazon account.

What is ID.me used for?
The IRS uses ID.me to verify your identity when you sign in to tools such as your online individual account, transcripts, IP PIN and business tax account. Other agencies, such as Veterans Affairs (VA), also use ID.me. The US trademark office (USPTO) uses ID.me to verify identities for trademark filings too; see our trademark guide for details.
Is it related to Amazon seller verification?
No. Amazon runs its own verification process: you upload identity and address documents, then provide a face photo or complete a video call with an Amazon representative. Amazon's seller registration guide does not mention ID.me.
Can someone living abroad complete ID.me verification for the IRS?
- The IRS's online services require an SSN or ITIN. If you have only a passport and no ITIN, you cannot sign in to an IRS account.
- ITIN holders cannot use automated selfie verification. Instead, they indicate that they live outside the US, upload their documents and complete a video call with an ID.me representative.
- Required documents: your ITIN plus either two primary documents or one primary and at least one secondary document. A passport and a national ID card count as primary; a utility bill or bank statement may count as secondary.
- You show the original documents during the call. Photocopies, expired documents and digital IDs are not accepted. The passport's photo page and the machine-readable zone at the bottom must be fully visible.
- If a document is in Turkish, you will be asked to show the original and its translation side by side in the same frame.
- You can use a non-US phone number for two-step verification.
Do I need ID.me as a foreign LLC owner?
In most cases, no. You obtain an EIN by fax or mail, and foreign-owned LLCs also file Form 5472 by fax or mail. None of these steps requires ID.me.
ID.me becomes relevant only if you want to use the IRS's online account, and for that you first need an ITIN.
