EIN application and US tax processes

An EIN is your company's US tax ID. You need it for your Amazon account, banking and payments. We help you apply with the correct information and plan next steps such as sales tax and resale certificates.

Who is this for?

  • Sellers who have formed their LLC but do not yet have an EIN
  • Sellers who want to use a resale certificate for wholesale purchases
  • Sellers who want to understand their sales tax obligations

What we do

EIN application

Completing the form in line with your company records, using the right application route for the owner's tax ID status.

Sales tax process

An overview of who collects tax on marketplace sales and which obligations remain yours; your accountant handles the details.

Resale certificate

State registrations and application support for the certificate used in wholesale buying.

Wholesale and sourcing

The company documents suppliers ask for, and a clean invoicing setup.

How it works

  1. 1We review your company documents and existing registrations.
  2. 2We identify any gaps and the right application route.
  3. 3We confirm scope and fees in a written proposal.
  4. 4We prepare the applications and follow them through.

Official form

Form SS-4 — EIN application form

The IRS form used to obtain an EIN (US tax ID) for your company. If your principal place of business is outside the US, you can't apply online; you send the form by fax (recommended) or mail.

How to file

  • Phone (only for international applicants with no place of business or office in the US): +1 267-941-1099, weekdays 6:00 a.m.–11:00 p.m. US Eastern Time; this is not a toll-free number. The EIN is issued during the call. Note: the IRS may redirect calls for US-formed companies on this line to fax or mail, so we recommend fax.
  • Fax: from outside the US +1 304-707-9471 (from within the US 855-215-1627). Under the IRS Fax-TIN program, the EIN is usually faxed back within 4 business days. Enter a fax number where you can receive the reply in the applicant's fax number field on the form.
  • No fax machine? You can use an online (virtual) fax service to send and receive faxes; the IRS sets no specific requirement for the sending method. Keep the transmission confirmation and the IRS reply.
  • Mail: Internal Revenue Service, Attn: EIN International Operation, Cincinnati, OH 45999. By mail, expect your EIN in about 4 weeks.
  • A foreign owner without an SSN or ITIN enters "foreign" in the responsible party's taxpayer ID field (line 7b); an ITIN is not required for an EIN.
  • The company name and address must match your state formation document (Articles of Organization) exactly.

Phone numbers and addresses are taken from the IRS's official instructions; check the current instructions before filing.

Frequently asked questions

I don't have an SSN. Can I get an EIN?

Yes. Foreign owners without a US tax ID can still get an EIN, but the process is different: if your principal place of business is outside the US, you can't apply online; you send Form SS-4 by fax (recommended) or mail.

Does Amazon pay sales tax on my behalf?

Every state with a sales tax has a marketplace facilitator law, so Amazon collects and remits sales tax on sales made through Amazon. That may not cover all your obligations, so confirm your position with your accountant.

What is the difference between an EIN and an ITIN?

An EIN is the company's tax ID; an ITIN is an individual tax number for people who aren't eligible for an SSN. The owner doesn't need an ITIN for the LLC to get an EIN.
