What is a D-U-N-S Number, and how do you get one?
D-U-N-S is the 9-digit identifier that Dun & Bradstreet assigns to businesses. In the US, it is the key to your business credit file, and some platforms ask for it when you open a company account. You can get one for free; there is no need to pay intermediaries who "sell" it.

What is a D-U-N-S Number used for?
- The number belongs to the business alone and is separate from any personal ID. Each business location receives its own number.
- It is not a credit score itself; the file behind it holds payment history and credit scores.
- Suppliers, lenders and some platforms may ask for it during supplier registration, credit applications or company account setup.
- The number never expires and never needs to be renewed.
How do you get one for a US LLC?
- First, use D&B's lookup tool to check whether your company already has a number.
- An LLC formed in the US applies as a US business, even if its owner is foreign.
- The form asks for the legal name, address, phone number, manager's name, legal structure, year founded, line of business and number of employees. Enter the name and address exactly as they appear on your state formation document.
- D&B may call you to verify the details and will send the number by email.
Timing and cost
| Route | Timing | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| D&B standard request | Up to 30 business days | Free |
| D&B expedited request | 8 business days | Paid (the amount is shown at the payment step) |
| Through Apple's lookup tool | Up to 5 business days | Free |
| For a Google Play organization account | May take up to 30 days | Free from D&B |
Where is it required?
- Apple Developer Program: to enroll as a company, you must have a D-U-N-S Number registered to the legal entity. Trade names and branches are not accepted.
- Google Play: an organization developer account cannot be opened without a D-U-N-S Number.
- US federal contracting: since April 4, 2022, the government has used the Unique Entity ID (UEI) issued by SAM.gov instead of the D-U-N-S Number.
- Supplier registration and trade credit applications: large buyers and suppliers may ask for it.
Is it required for Amazon?
Neither Amazon's official seller registration guide nor its Brand Registry requirements ask for a D-U-N-S Number. We found no official Amazon source for claims that some categories require one. Still, a D-U-N-S Number can help you build business credit and buy from suppliers on payment terms.

Warning: fake invoices and intermediaries
- D-U-N-S Numbers never expire. Emails that look like a "renewal invoice" do not come from D&B. Do not pay them.
- You can get the number free of charge from D&B and its partners. There is no need to pay intermediaries high fees.
