What is the Amazon Buy Box? How the Featured Offer is chosen
Several sellers can offer the same product on Amazon, but the Add to Cart and Buy Now buttons at the top of the product page are tied to one offer. Because most sales go through that offer, which seller is featured there has a direct effect on revenue. Amazon now calls it the Featured Offer; many sellers still use the older name, Buy Box. This guide covers the factors Amazon names publicly, the situations where no offer is featured at all, and the risks of automated repricing. Amazon does not publish how the factors are weighted, so no one can guarantee the Featured Offer.

Are the Buy Box and the Featured Offer the same thing?
Yes. Amazon calls the offer area near the top of a product page the Offer Display and the offer shown there the Featured Offer, and notes that it was formerly known as the Buy Box. This guide uses both terms interchangeably.
Each product on Amazon has a single product page, and every seller offering that product is listed on it. The Featured Offer shows the price, condition, delivery speed and free shipping threshold. Other offers appear under "Other sellers on Amazon" ("More Buying Choices" in the UK), which customers have to open separately.
Who is considered for the Featured Offer?
For a long time Amazon applied a performance-based seller eligibility step before an offer could be featured. According to official announcements posted on the Seller Central forums in 2026, Amazon is removing that first eligibility step: gradually in the US from July 2026, and in the EU and UK from 20 July 2026. The announcements stress that the way the Featured Offer is selected is not changing, and that being considered does not guarantee being featured. Since they don't spell out exactly what the removed step covered, check the current Seller Central help pages for details.
Even without that step, some basics still apply: the offer must be active and in stock, the item must match the condition shown on the page, and the account must be able to sell. Some tools, such as Amazon's automated pricing tool, require a Professional selling plan.
What factors does Amazon look at?
The factors Amazon lists on its seller pages fall into four groups. Their weights aren't disclosed, and strength in one doesn't always make up for weakness in another.
| Factor | What Amazon says | Where to monitor it |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Featured Offers are commonly at or below the lowest-priced alternatives. Consider the total price, including shipping. | Price and shipping column in Manage All Inventory; Pricing Opportunities tab on the Pricing Health page |
| Delivery | Offers with fast, free shipping and more certain delivery dates are more likely to be featured. | Shipping templates and handling time settings |
| Order experience | The correct, undamaged, authentic item that matches the listed condition; accurate charges. | Account Health, Voice of the Customer |
| Stock | An out-of-stock offer can't be the Featured Offer. | Manage All Inventory, inventory planning |
How is the Featured Offer chosen? The general flow
How an offer becomes the Featured Offer
Baseline
- Active, in-stock offer
- Condition matches the page
- Account able to sell
Comparison
- Total price including shipping
- Delivery speed and certainty
- Order experience and performance
Featured Offer
- Add to Cart and Buy Now are tied to this offer
- Other offers are listed below
No Featured Offer
- No eligible offer remains
- The page shows "See options"
- Sales and ad delivery drop
Why might no offer be featured at all?
Sometimes no seller's offer is featured, and the page shows "See options" instead of the buttons. Amazon lists running out of stock and pricing that is too high or too low among the reasons. If a price looks like an error, Amazon may make the offer ineligible and ask the seller to confirm it.
Customers then need an extra click to buy, and conversion falls. Sponsored Products ads also don't run when the product isn't the Featured Offer or is out of stock, so the problem stops advertising as well.
- Check the Pricing Health page: it lists offers that are currently ineligible to be featured.
- Compare the total price (price plus shipping) with recent prices on Amazon and with competitive prices elsewhere.
- If stock is running low, plan the reorder and the shipment to the warehouse in advance.
What does the fair pricing policy say?
Amazon asks sellers to read its Marketplace Fair Pricing Policy before setting prices. The policy aims to prevent pricing that harms customer trust; setting a price significantly above recent prices seen on or off Amazon is one example. In such cases the Featured Offer can be removed, and serious or repeated cases can lead to account-level action. The current text is in Seller Central and can only be read after signing in.
Amazon states that it has zero tolerance for price gouging during emergencies. Raising prices sharply when demand spikes trades a short-term gain for risk to the offer and the account.
The policy has also drawn regulatory attention: Canada's Competition Bureau announced in 2025 that it is investigating it, noting there was no conclusion of wrongdoing at that time. For sellers, the practical point doesn't change: the policy is in force and has to be followed.
Does FBA or FBM have the edge?
According to Amazon, fulfilling orders yourself (FBM) can be just as effective as FBA for becoming the Featured Offer. What matters is delivery speed, certainty and the order experience, not the fulfillment method itself. FBA's contribution is mostly indirect: the Prime badge, fast delivery, and customer service and returns handled by Amazon.
The route to a Prime badge with FBM is Seller Fulfilled Prime, which requires meeting thresholds for late shipments, valid tracking and cancellations, and passing a trial period. Fees and a full comparison of the two methods are covered in a separate guide.
Where can you see your Buy Box percentage?
Business Reports in Seller Central show a Featured Offer (Buy Box) percentage at the ASIN level. According to explanations from Amazon representatives on the seller forums, it reflects the share of page views in which your offer was featured, so it is based on views rather than time.
Read the trend rather than a single figure. If the percentage is falling, check price, delivery time, stock and Account Health in turn. If a new seller appears on the page at a much lower price, it is also worth asking whether that offer is really the same product.
Brand owners, resellers and unauthorized offers
Even if you own the brand, other sellers who buy the product through legitimate channels and resell it can make offers on the same page. Amazon doesn't list brand ownership among the Featured Offer factors; the brand owner's offer is also judged on price, delivery and performance.
What sellers call a "hijacker" is a different situation: an offer on your page for a counterfeit, imitation or different product. Brand Registry provides tools here: added protection for product information, violation reporting (Report a Violation), serialized authentication (Transparency) and, for eligible brands, direct removal of counterfeit listings (Project Zero).
Only file a report when there is a genuine rights violation. Reporting a legitimate reseller just because their price is lower can create risk for the account that files it. The lasting way to limit unauthorized selling is clear distribution and reseller agreements from the start.
When does automated repricing help?
A repricer changes your price automatically based on rules you set. Amazon's own tool, Automate Pricing, is included with the Professional plan at no extra charge. It offers rules that price against the Featured Offer, the lowest price or the lowest external price, rules based on sales, and rules for business pricing. Each rule requires a minimum price; a maximum price is optional. Amazon states plainly that the tool doesn't guarantee the Featured Offer. Third-party repricers also exist; when choosing one, minimum price protection and compliance with Amazon's pricing policy should come first.
- Race to the bottom: two sellers' automated rules can keep pulling each other down. Set a minimum price that still leaves a profit after all costs.
- Full cost: when setting the minimum, include the referral fee, FBA fees, advertising and an allowance for returns.
- Sudden spikes: a maximum price, or the setting that prevents prices from rising well above recent levels, helps avoid conflicts with the fair pricing policy.
- Single-seller pages: if you're the only seller of your own brand, you often don't need a repricer; the real work is stock, delivery and account health.
Is it different in the UK?
The core logic is the same: Amazon.co.uk also uses the term "featured offer", shows eligible offers that don't win in the "More Buying Choices" box, and says neither placement is guaranteed. The removal of the eligibility step took effect in the EU and UK on 20 July 2026. Delivery and price comparisons use each marketplace's own data, so an offer's status in the US tells you nothing about its status in the UK.
Common mistakes
- Focusing only on price while running out of stock or keeping long handling times.
- Comparing item prices without counting shipping.
- Setting a repricer's minimum price below cost.
- Raising prices sharply when demand jumps and running into the fair pricing policy.
- Trying to remove legitimate resellers with unfounded infringement reports.
- Not noticing a falling Buy Box percentage for weeks.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Amazon Buy Box?
It's the offer shown near the top of a product page and tied to the Add to Cart and Buy Now buttons. Amazon now calls it the Featured Offer. When several sellers offer the same product, most sales go through this offer.
Is there a sure way to win the Buy Box?
No. Amazon says it looks at price, delivery, order experience and stock, but doesn't publish how they're weighted. It also states that its own automated pricing tool doesn't guarantee the Featured Offer.
Do I need FBA to win the Buy Box?
No. According to Amazon, fulfilling orders yourself can be just as effective as FBA. What counts is delivery speed, certainty and the order experience.
Why does the product page say "See options"?
It means no offer is currently eligible to be featured. Amazon lists running out of stock and pricing that is too high or too low as possible reasons. The Pricing Health page in Seller Central lists offers that are ineligible.
If I own the brand, do I automatically get the Buy Box?
No. If other sellers legitimately sell on the same page, the brand owner's offer is also judged on price, delivery and performance. Brand Registry offers reporting and protection tools against counterfeit or unauthorized offers.
